Every Lantern Festival, we usually eat warm tangyuan and stroll through lantern displays. This year, though, the sky has an especially romantic surprise in store for the March 3 Lantern Festival night! That’s right: the rare spectacle of a total lunar eclipse and a “blood moon” will appear together. Not only is it the year’s only clearly visible lunar eclipse, its breathtaking totality phase will last a full 59 minutes. Miss it, and you’ll have to wait until 2028 and 2029 to witness such a striking red moon in Taiwan or Hong Kong again. Circle the date and get ready to look up with someone special!

A golden 59 minutes: Catch the red moon at just the right time

If you want to capture this mysterious red moon perfectly, timing is key. This year’s viewing highlight falls around dusk: by the time the moon slowly rises at around 17:50, it will already be entering the partial eclipse phase, with a small portion darkened. The most anticipated moment begins at 19:04, when the moon will be fully immersed in Earth’s shadow and take on a mysterious deep-red hue. Totality will last a full 59 minutes, ending at 20:03, so there’ll be plenty of time to take it in and snap photos. The moon will then gradually return to its full shape around 21:17, bringing this celestial show to a close.

The coast and the mountains are both great options

With the schedule in hand, the next step is finding the best place to watch. Since the moon will be low in the sky during the early partial eclipse at dusk, choose an open spot with a completely unobstructed view to the east and southeast. Whether it’s a beach with the sound of waves, a mountain with sweeping views, or an open park in the city, all are excellent options. As long as the weather cooperates that night, this striking sight will be fully visible to the naked eye.

The science and mysterious legends behind the romance

As you look at the red moon in the sky, you may wonder what causes it. Scientifically, this visual spectacle is the result of Rayleigh scattering: when Earth blocks the sunlight, the atmosphere scatters blue light, leaving only longer-wavelength red light to refract onto the moon’s surface. Beyond being a romantic sight, it is also a natural laboratory for observing the state of Earth’s atmosphere.

In ancient times, this mysterious red hue inspired awe. East Asian folklore tells of the “heavenly dog devouring the moon,” and people believed they had to beat gongs and drums to drive away the mythical beast. Indian mythology tells of Rahu swallowing the moon in revenge after being beheaded. In distant Mesopotamia, a substitute king was even appointed to bear the disaster brought by the blood moon. These ancient legends across cultures undoubtedly add a few touches of mystery to this scientific celestial event.
