Summary

-Located in Chengde, Hebei Province, China, the Chapel of Sound was designed by OPEN Architecture and completed in 2021. -The building is constructed from concrete mixed with local rock fragments, featuring a layered exterior that echoes mountain rock formations and an interior with a semi-outdoor performance space. -Openings at the top and sides allow light and natural sounds to enter; even when there are no performances, one can sit and listen to the birdsong, wind, and raindrops.

From a distance, it looks like a massive boulder dropped into a valley; it’s only when light glows from its openings that you realize it houses a space you can walk into. This valley concert hall, named the Chapel of Sound, is located near the ruins of the Great Wall in Chengde, China. Designed by OPEN Architecture and completed in 2021, what’s even more curious than its exterior is this: even when no one is performing on stage, there are still sounds worth hearing here.

The building uses concrete mixed with local crushed stone. Its rough surface and layers extending outward echo the rock formations of the surrounding mountains. From different angles, it resembles both a rock and a sculpture scaled up to hold people, while irregular openings create gaps in the heavy shell that offer glimpses into the interior.

The space includes a semi-outdoor concert hall, an outdoor stage, and a rooftop viewing platform. Climbing the stairs allows you to overlook the valley and the Great Wall, while stepping back inside draws your gaze into the cave-like walls. Taking in the scenery and listening to music become two parts of a single visit here.

When there are no performances, nature takes the stage

The openings at the top and sides are a crucial part of the concert hall’s design. They help adjust the space’s acoustics while letting in the sounds of birds, insects, and wind rustling through the leaves outside. When the instruments stop and the audience falls silent, the tiny sounds we usually ignore finally get a chance to be heard.

Sunlight streams through the openings, casting light and shadow across the rough walls as time passes. When it rains, water falls through the central opening at the top and is guided away by a floor drainage system. The weather itself becomes part of the spatial experience. Imagine sitting inside this “boulder,” looking up at the sky and listening to the raindrops fall—you might suddenly find yourself reluctant to pull out your headphones.
