Summary

• Nike has developed the new Nike Hybrid training shoe system to address the hybrid training trend combining speed, strength, and endurance, blurring the lines between traditional running and training shoes. • The collection is divided into the Hybrid RN for daily training and the Hybrid Fly for competition, establishing a two-shoe framework for training and race days similar to professional running shoes. • The Hybrid RN combines ReactX foam, Air Zoom units, and a wider base to balance the responsive feel of running with the non-slip stability required for weight training. • The Hybrid Fly features ZoomX foam, a full-length carbon fiber plate, and a four-zone traction system, providing both high propulsion and weightlifting support, specifically built for hybrid fitness competitions.

Squats and lunges right after a run, followed by sled pushes and rowing… As hybrid training and related competitions gain traction, fitness routines are shifting from “running today, weight training tomorrow” to a combined focus on speed, strength, and endurance in a single session. But a new problem has emerged: should you wear running shoes or training shoes? This time, Nike decided not to choose, building the all-new Nike Hybrid footwear system from scratch to pack both needs into one pair of shoes.

For both running and weight training, Nike simply built a new shoe from scratch

The hardest part of hybrid training is your body’s need to quickly switch between different modes. One moment you’re chasing running speed, and the next you might need to plant your feet firmly for sled pushes, lunges, or other strength exercises. In the past, seeking the bounce of a running shoe usually meant sacrificing the stable grip of a training shoe, and vice versa.

Because of this, Nike Hybrid wasn’t just a simple modification of existing running shoes. It was built specifically for hybrid physical sports, splitting into two models: the Nike Hybrid RN for daily training, and the more advanced Nike Hybrid Fly for actual race days. Just as runners distinguish between daily trainers and race day shoes, hybrid training now has its own dedicated lineup.

For everyday workouts, reach for the Hybrid RN: handling both running and weight training

For most people who alternate between running and lifting, the Nike Hybrid RN is the more practical choice for daily wear. The sole combines ReactX foam with a forefoot Air Zoom unit to maintain the bouncy feel needed for running. At the same time, the outsole is wider and paired with an X-shaped upper structure to provide the stability required for strength training and rapid movements.

In other words, it aims to solve a very real gym annoyance: not wanting to pack two pairs of shoes for the treadmill and the weights area in a single workout. With an engineered mesh upper and a dual-rubber outsole for added support and traction, the Hybrid RN makes perfect sense if your routine isn’t strictly limited to just running or just lifting.

Save the Hybrid Fly for competition—it even has a carbon plate

The other model, the Nike Hybrid Fly, is clearly more serious. Designed specifically as a race day shoe for hybrid competitions, it features ZoomX foam, a full-length carbon fiber Flyplate, and dual Air Zoom units in the forefoot, all aimed at providing a faster sense of propulsion during running segments.

But it can’t just charge forward like a traditional carbon-plated running shoe. The sole is intentionally wider and incorporates a four-zone traction system with sidewall wrapping, so athletes stay stable when switching from running to sled pushes or lunges. By combining the ZoomX and carbon plate familiar to runners with the stability and grip required of training shoes, Nike Hybrid ensures that girls doing hybrid training no longer have to choose between speed and stability.
