Has it been a while since you last rode the Peak Tram up to The Peak Tower? While many think of it purely as a tourist spot, a fascinating new venue recently opened quietly on the second floor. Independent Quarry Bay restaurant NOOK has officially expanded to the Peak with its new space, NOOK@The Peak. Beyond panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Victoria Harbour, the eatery serves up refined, playful contemporary Hong Kong cuisine reimagined from familiar local diner and street food classics.
From Cha Chaan Teng to French Culinary Arts: Dishes That Bring a Smile
Chef Ling grew up in Hong Kong, where her family ran a local cha chaan teng. She later went to the UK to study French culinary technique before honing her craft in London and Melbourne. This menu feels like her childhood food memories carefully reinterpreted through delicate Western cooking techniques.
The appetizer Mapo Beef Croquette (HK$ 78) packs the spicy savoriness of mapo meat sauce into a beef cutlet patty. Coated in Japanese panko and fried until crispy, it pairs with a smooth homemade tofu sauce for a rich flavor that never feels heavy.
Another dish, the Dragon King Siu Mai (HK$ 188), draws inspiration from traditional Cantonese steamed pork with dried squid. Pairing cuttlefish and squid dumplings with red prawn tartare, it’s finished with a squid-infused French beurre blanc foam, adding a touch of elegance to a familiar homestyle staple.
For group dining, the seafood-heavy mains are ideal to share. The Typhoon Shelter Soft-Shell Crab Fried Rice (HK$ 248) places a whole crispy fried soft-shell crab over fried rice, topped with classic spicy fried garlic for authentic wok hei and garlic aroma. Meanwhile, the Salted Egg Yolk Lobster E-Fu Noodles (HK$ 498)—a nod to traditional Cantonese banquets—features lobster baked in salted egg yolk butter atop e-fu noodles tossed in ginger, scallion, and lobster bisque. The savory egg yolk rich coat clings to every noodle, delivering incredible flavor.
A Stone Lion Dessert and Hidden Mahjong Tiles
The signature dessert, Imperial Seal (HK$ 128), is practically made for photos. The pastry chef crafts a lifelike traditional guardian lion out of black sesame chocolate, set over chewy mochi stuffed with peanut mousse and a crisp peanut chocolate base. It recreates the familiar taste of Hong Kong’s traditional black sesame and peanut glutinous rice balls. If you’re in the mood for a drink, the bar crafts locally inspired cocktails like Iron & Gold (HK$ 120)—a gin-based blend of Tieguanyin oolong tea, passion fruit, and yuzu, offering a crisp, refreshing tea flavor.
Beyond the plate, the space itself is filled with clever details. Designed by Anti-Antics’ Michelle Lai, the interior incorporates subtle nods to the circular architecture of Lai Tak Tsuen public housing estate in its ceiling and lines, while the bar incorporates elements of bamboo scaffolding and shop iron shutters. Most striking is a golden birdcage pendant light suspended overhead, holding individually carved mahjong tiles—a playful nod to the Cantonese double meaning shared by birds and mahjong.
By the entrance, a dedicated retail space called “The NOOK@ Edit” showcases lifestyle goods, apparel, and in-house designs from independent Hong Kong creators and community brands. After enjoying dinner and taking in the night sky, picking up a piece of local creativity on your way down makes a trip to The Peak feel uniquely grounded and stylish.
