Real rest isn’t scrolling on your phone: a 3-minute quick break to pull your racing heartbeat back online
Giving yourself a few minutes of blank space actually works better than coffee!
We’re always waiting for the weekend or a long vacation, overlooking the fact that we’re already overloaded during the workweek. In recent years, “micro-breaks” have been widely discussed in workplace psychology around the world. Rather than scrolling social media and creating a second wave of information overload, a true “mental reset” means actively disconnecting from the outside world. Just 3 minutes can help prevent emotional exhaustion and keep your mind “online.”
1. Recognize “fake rest”
You may think opening Instagram counts as a break, but your brain is still processing a huge amount of visual information and social comparison. That’s why you can sometimes feel more tired the more you rest. The key to a true quick break is “subtraction”: letting your brain pause its intake of any new information.
2. Filter your environment
If you’re in an open office, put on noise-canceling headphones and play white noise, such as rain or ocean waves, to create a temporary mental refuge. It’s less about escape than it is “mental refueling” for the road ahead.
3. Create a “3-minute ritual”
A ritual doesn’t have to be elaborate. Pour yourself a glass of warm water and focus on the warmth as it flows down your throat, or do a few simple neck stretches. When you bring your attention back to your body, the noise around you fades somewhat. This kind of “returning to the body” practice is a grounding technique often used in therapy.
The 3-minute quick-break method
For the first minute, try taking a deep breath. Don’t overthink it; just feel your chest slowly expand.
For the second minute, shift your gaze to the window or into the distance, giving your eyes a break from the same screen.
For the third minute, ask yourself a simple question: “What do I need right now?” Sometimes the answer is water, sometimes it’s moving around a little, and sometimes you just need to pause. The beauty of a quick break is that it doesn’t require you to become mindful or pull yourself together right away; it simply brings you gently back to the present.
In a city that’s always busy, these small breaks can hit refresh for your life with precision. Only by bringing ourselves back online can we truly move through life alongside it.
