We've All Been Stuck Here Before: 5 Ways to Help When You're Lost and Have Lost Passion for Your Job
Asking yourself what you *don’t* want to do is also a way!
Sometimes, it’s not that we’re not working hard or unwilling to change. It’s just that a voice inside keeps saying, “I don’t like my current job,” yet the next sentence never comes: “What do I want to do?” This inexpressible feeling of being stuck can be even more anxiety-inducing than hating the job itself. In fact, it’s far from uncommon. Career counselors often say that the biggest challenge people face today isn’t having too few choices, but having too many and not knowing how to choose. In an age of information overload, when everyone seems to be “living their ideal life” on social media, not knowing what you want is a perfectly normal psychological response.

1. First, acknowledge that being “stuck” isn’t failure
You’re not lazy or lacking direction; you’re simply in the process of waiting for clarity from within. Some answers can’t be found through thinking alone. They gradually emerge through living and feeling. So don’t rush to blame yourself. Giving yourself some open space is a form of growth, too.

2. Instead of asking, “What do I want to do?” ask, “What don’t I want to do?”
Make a list of the parts of your current job that leave you most exhausted or resistant. Is it the endless meetings? The processes that leave no room for creativity? Or a manager whose values don’t align with yours? The process of elimination is more effective than you might think. The clearer you are about what you don’t want, the closer you are to knowing what you do want.

3. Try doing something small and different
You don’t have to quit your job, leave without another one lined up, or meditate in Bali for 30 days to be “finding your direction.” Direction builds up through everyday life. Sign up for a class you’ve always been interested in but never taken, start an Instagram account to share what you like, or simply notice what kinds of YouTube videos you click on… These clues will gradually form an outline for you before you know it.

4. Ask others how they found their direction
Sometimes, other people’s stories can be a mirror. Talk with trusted friends about how they found work they enjoy, or send a direct message to someone you admire and ask, “How did you know this was what you wanted to do?” It can inspire you and offer a way to connect with the world.

5. Accept that “uncertainty” can be an answer, too
Sometimes, we think we need a clear goal to keep living. But perhaps being able to admit, “I’m still exploring,” is the most honest and courageous way to move forward.

Not liking your current job is already a clear sign. You’re aware of it and sensitive to it, and that alone puts you closer to the life you want than many people. The road ahead may not bring answers right away, but you can keep moving, trying things, and making adjustments along the way. The detours that don’t work out and the choices you try before letting go will all, at some point, come back to support you. So don’t rush to “know the answer.” Start by practicing “listening to yourself”; that’s already a wonderful start.
