Each additional person speeds up aging by 9 months
The research team calls people who constantly create small frictions, make life harder, and keep you in a state of stress “Hasslers.” The data show that prolonged mental strain like this speeds up aging by about 1.5%. In terms of biological age, that works out to an average of 9 additional months. About one in three people has at least one such troublemaker in their close social circle, quietly draining their energy.

Your physique and health can suffer, too
The cost of dealing with these difficult people over the long term goes far beyond fine lines around your eyes or a dull complexion. The study further confirms that people with more Hasslers show clear negative changes in both mental health and physical measures. Along with significantly higher tendencies toward depression and anxiety, their BMI and waist-to-hip ratio are more likely to get out of control, and rates of multiple chronic illnesses are also relatively higher. This means that emotionally draining interactions are quietly taking a comprehensive toll on your overall health. Every time you swallow your anger, it leaves a mark on your body that isn’t easily erased.

Bring your focus back to yourself
When dealing with Hasslers that can speed up aging, the most direct solution is, of course, to keep your distance. In reality, though, we can’t easily remove certain people from our lives, especially family members or coworkers we see every day. Since we can’t completely change other people’s patterns of behavior, learning to set clear psychological boundaries becomes essential to protecting ourselves. Try creating some emotional distance and bringing your focus back to your own feelings. Save your energy for the people and things that are worth it. After all, your precious youth shouldn’t be wasted on needless depletion.
