Do bouquets only belong in your hands? Seoul-based floral artist Yeeun Zhang has a very different answer. Moving beyond the conventions of traditional floral design, she transforms fresh flowers into clothing and accessories, turning plants usually found in vases into works of art you can truly wear.

At first glance, her pieces look like haute couture gowns. Look closer, and you’ll see that the hems, bodices, and even every silhouette are made entirely from layers of real flowers. In one example, a mass of calla lilies is arranged tightly together, running down the body to the floor to create a dramatic trailing skirt. The petals’ natural curves and colors unexpectedly become the garment’s most delicate “fabric.”

Among her most eye-catching creations are the giant wings she makes from masses of fresh flowers. Lilies, orchids, and other blooms are densely arranged one by one, extending outward along either side of the body; some are so large that they nearly envelop the entire wearer. Different flowers create entirely different effects, in shades of soft pink, pale yellow, and white-orange. From a distance, it looks as though a pair of floral wings has truly grown from the body.

Rather than simply using flowers as decoration, she sees floral materials as a medium that can be shaped. Through arrangement and layering, as well as the natural lines of different flowers, she takes floral art beyond vases and bouquets, transforming it into clothing, accessories, and even sculptural three-dimensional works. It turns out that fresh flowers can become a romantic, life-filled gown without fabric or thread.
