In the fast-paced rhythm of Hong Kong life, it’s nice to slow down once in a while and find an open space to catch your breath. If you’re planning a stroll around Kai Tak anytime soon, a massive, playful pumpkin is waiting to greet you right outside the new landmark, The Twins.
Created by the late contemporary art pioneer Yayoi Kusama, the monumental sculpture “Dancing Pumpkin” has been acquired by Lifestyle International for its permanent corporate collection. Unveiled on November 6, 2026, in the public space of Kai Tak Station Square right outside The Twins Tower 2, it stands as the sculpture’s only permanent display location in Asia.
Asia’s only permanent display: A dynamic form lifted by 11 tentacle-like pillars
Yayoi Kusama worked tirelessly throughout her life, with the pumpkin serving as her longest-running and most iconic symbol. She once described pumpkins as “generous and unpretentious,” offering a “powerful sense of spiritual peace.” Created in 2020, “Dancing Pumpkin” has previously toured the New York Botanical Garden, the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. The edition that arrived in Hong Kong was specially crafted; it is one of a limited edition of five worldwide, making Hong Kong its only home city in Asia.
Standing nearly 5 meters tall and spanning 8 meters across, the sculpture pushes the structural and scale boundaries of her previous pumpkin works. Its most striking feature is that it doesn’t rest flat on the ground. Instead, 11 dynamic, tentacle-like pillars lift it high into the air. Wrapped in her signature yellow-and-black polka dots, it looks like a giant, joyful pumpkin mid-dance. When public art moves out of cold gallery walls and into daily life, simply walking by and looking up at its plump, energetic shape brings a gentle moment of comfort.
Step into the “SANDŌ” space: Rare prints and nearly 100 official merchandise items
Alongside the outdoor sculpture, the “Dancing Pumpkin: Hello, Hong Kong!” exhibition runs through March 31, 2027, on the ground floor of The Twins Tower 2 (G04-G10). The exhibition details the creative journey behind the sculpture and presents more than 20 rare prints from Kusama’s studio spanning the late 1980s to the mid-2000s, organized in collaboration with Ota Fine Arts. Select pieces are available for private purchase or through live bidding on November 21.
The accompanying official pop-up store offers nearly 100 iconic merch items, ranging from classic red and yellow “Pumpkin Object” figures, keychains, and tote bags to cup-and-saucer sets that bring her signature dots to your daily tea break. For those wanting a deeper look into her inner world, the store also carries the Chinese edition of her autobiography, *Infinity Net: The Autobiography of Yayoi Kusama*, along with various art publications.
