Do dogs have their own library too? A California hotel created a “Stick Library” where you pick one to take to the beach
Dogs picking out their sticks so seriously is just too cute!
Summary
- In California, The Sanctuary Beach Resort has created a “stick library” where dogs can freely choose the branches they like.
- The shelves are stocked with branches in all shapes and sizes, and once your fur kid picks one, you can head straight to the beach to play.
- The library runs on a sharing concept: guests can return the sticks, or leave new ones behind for the next dog.
- Plenty of dogs “borrow and never return,” so in the end humans have to quietly restock the supply.
If a library had no books and only shelves full of sticks, dogs would probably be its most loyal readers! The Sanctuary Beach Resort near Monterey Bay, California, has set up an adorable Stick Library along the path to the beach, especially for furry guests on vacation. The shelves are neatly lined with sticks of different sizes and shapes, and dogs can choose their favorite before taking it to the beach to play.
The Stick Library works much like a Little Free Library, except books have been replaced with dogs’ favorite sticks. Furry guests staying at the resort can freely “check out” a stick and return it when they’re done playing. Visitors can also leave new sticks behind to share with the next guest.
The cutest part is that dogs often “borrow without returning.”

Although it was originally intended as a shared “borrow it, remember to return it” system, it seems harder to put into practice. Resort general manager Sylvain Briens has shared that once most dogs find a stick they love, they happily take it straight home. That means humans still have to quietly restock the shelves. For dogs, this is less a library than a free stick shop!
