When dessert is no longer just a supporting role: Monroe madeleines turn sweets into something chic and elegant
Every flavor is just right, like an understated kind of refinement
In Taipei’s dining scene, some flavors never clamor for attention, yet quietly linger in your memory. When a dessert once reserved for the end of a meal becomes reason enough for people to make a special trip, it’s no longer simply the finale, but the beginning of the entire experience. This time, European bistro Li Chiu is giving its beloved madeleines a stage of their own.

Approaching its fourth anniversary, Li Chiu has continued to expand in recent years. Following Rachel, its brunch spot on Fujin Street, it has recently launched a new madeleine gift-box brand, “Monroe,” located right next door to Li Chiu. The madeleines were originally created in Li Chiu’s early days as an after-dinner dessert to accompany its French dishes, yet unexpectedly became the restaurant’s most popular signature item. Drawing on French classics, chef Su Yi-Nong creates flavors that are pure yet distinctive, taking this petite dessert from supporting player to leading role.
For its debut, “Monroe” is offering three flavors: a classic French original and two chocolate varieties with more depth: 40% milk chocolate with sea salt caramel, and 70% dark chocolate with orange peel. It will also introduce limited-edition seasonal flavors in the future, continuing the brand’s characteristically inspiration-filled, surprising pace. Along with enjoying the aroma and texture of freshly baked madeleines in-store with coffee or tea, customers can choose from 2-piece pouches and 6- or 10-piece gift boxes for more refined gifting needs. Another eye-catching offering is a madeleine tower, hand-assembled from mini madeleines, which looks especially chic for birthdays, parties, or corporate gifts.
When dessert is no longer just an after-meal accompaniment, but becomes a daily ritual worth making a special trip to bring home, “Monroe” may be hoping to convey just this kind of beauty: something that captures your heart at first sight and leaves you wanting to savor it again and again.
