If memories took shape: Korean artists’ group exhibition Remembered Moments drifts ashore in Taiwan

If you’re also thinking of getting out and about in the pleasant weather now that spring has arrived, exhibitions may be on your list, including 《Remembered Moments》, a group exhibition at Soka Art Taipei featuring three contemporary Korean women artists: Lee Anon, Choi Hyeji, and Yi Yi Jeong-Eun.

Of the three Korean artists in the group exhibition 《Remembered Moments》, Lee Anon has been invited to take part in a group exhibition in Hollywood and is known for works that create new modes of life through albino creatures and mysterious caves. In 2024, Choi Hyeji was selected for a residency at Cité internationale des arts in Paris and is known for creating with tools other than brushes. Yi Yi Jeong-Eun’s paintings convey vitality through three-dimensional forms and have been shown at galleries across Asia. Bringing together the artists’ distinctly different visual languages, the exhibition focuses on fleeting moments in life, using the materiality of painting (matière) to solidify abstract emotions and memories into tangible traces on canvas.

《Remembered Moments》 centers on transience and traces, delicately exploring the emotional layers of loss, repair, and resonance. Like the subtle yet resilient changes that come with the transition from spring to summer, the three artists use their brushes to capture the warmth of memory and material, creating profound records of life through painting. For them, painting is more than the application of color. Through an almost obsessive pursuit of the texture, layers, and brushwork of paint, they transform memories that are fluid and difficult to grasp into physical forms. Their works all convey the resilience of life’s transitions and growth.
Lee Anon: Reflecting on wounds and healing, and regeneration after loss
Lee Anon was invited to take part in a group exhibition in Hollywood, United States. Her practice reflects on the cycle of life, and she is a closely watched emerging artist in Korean contemporary art. She constructs a visual stage filled with metaphor, centered on a group of albino animals living in a mysterious forest. Lacking melanin, these creatures appear somewhat fragile yet sacred. Lee Anon deliberately juxtaposes bold, powerful brushstrokes with extremely fine details, creating tension in her work. The seemingly shattered fragments of memory do not disappear on the canvas; instead, they evolve into a state of symbiosis, telling of how life finds the strength for unity and regeneration after pain.

Choi Hyeji: Resonance in scenes layered with everyday objects
In 2024, Choi Hyeji was selected for a residency at the renowned Cité internationale des arts in Paris. Her work has been widely exhibited at major art spaces including Shinsegae Gallery in Seoul and Print Bakery, and she has also held a solo exhibition in Paris titled 《LIFE-BUSAN》. Choi Hyeji is skilled at layering thick colors and deliberately retaining rough surfaces. Using tools for applying cement or readily available kitchen utensils, she creates an atmosphere between “real-life situations” and “blurred memories.” Her depictions of Busan and fragments of daily life bring the focus back to the ordinary yet emotionally stirring corners of the city, transforming them into textured, lasting impressions in the mind.
Yi Yi Jeong-Eun: The density of time imprinted in impasto
Yi Yi Jeong-Eun has extensive international exhibition experience, with her work shown multiple times at Ora-Ora in Hong Kong and Gana Contemporary in Seoul. Her work has a powerful emotional intensity, born of her interest in exploring how emotions continually accumulate over time and take on tangible weight. Using expressive impasto, she builds richly textured, rhythmic surfaces of rising and falling forms on canvas. These dense layers of paint are an embodiment of time and resemble a vibration of the human spirit, allowing viewers to directly sense the deep, substantial weight of those emotions as they gaze at the work.
