Summary

  • Bangkok design label ELMTOLI has launched the GRINN glass series, which cleverly uses condensation from iced drinks to leave an adorable “smiley face” on the table.
  • The series comes in multiple shapes and bright colors, balancing playfulness with practicality, and every glass is mouth-blown by artisans using traditional techniques.
  • A special groove at the bottom of the glass turns annoying water rings into little everyday surprises.

One of the most annoying things about iced drinks in summer is the constant condensation on the glass, which eventually runs down onto the table and has you reaching for a napkin. Bangkok design brand ELMTOLI has turned this everyday annoyance into a clever design detail with its glassware series, “GRINN,” making even those pesky water marks at the bottom of the glass a pleasant surprise.

Water marks from the bottom of a glass can actually smile

GRINN’s most interesting secret is hidden in the bottom of each glass. When a cold drink causes condensation to form on the glass, the droplets run down its sides and collect in specially designed raised grooves on the bottom. The moment you lift the glass, a “smiley face” made of water droplets is left on the table. Rather than wanting to wipe away the water mark right away, you’ll start looking forward to each time you pick up your glass.

Each one is traditionally hand-blown

Beyond the little surprise on the bottom, GRINN itself has a candy-like appeal. Each glass is traditionally hand-blown by glass artisans, so the thickness, lines, and clarity vary slightly from one to the next. The collection comes in five styles: a classic water glass, highball glass, mug, beer glass, and pitcher, in amber, green, powder blue, and pink. They are eye-catching even simply sitting on the table.

GRINN doesn’t try to keep glasses from “sweating.” Instead, it makes condensation part of the design. A simple smiley-face groove adds a touch of humor to a minor everyday annoyance and gives the ordinary act of drinking water a moment to look forward to.
