Thank you for protecting our inner child! Hello Kitty’s third-generation designer Yuko Yamaguchi announces retirement, looking back on 46 years of gentle dedication
She’s the soul who led Kitty out into the world, and an old friend who grew up right alongside us.
When you think of Hello Kitty, her signature bow and innocent round face may be what come to mind. For longtime fans, though, the true soul behind the character is “Kitty’s mom,” Yuko Yamaguchi. Since taking over in 1980, she has worked alongside Kitty for a full 46 years. Sanrio recently officially confirmed that the legendary designer will retire, marking the graceful end of an era.

Yuko Yamaguchi officially took over as Hello Kitty’s third-generation designer in 1980, when the character was facing a decline in popularity. Rather than sticking to convention, she went out into the field to listen to fans, boldly dressed Kitty in fashionable looks, gave her different backstories, and even challenged the idea at the time that cartoon characters could only appear on stationery. Her flexibility and creativity transformed Kitty from a simple graphic into the fashion icon she is today, standing alongside major luxury brands and streetwear trends.

As for the successor fans have been most eager to know about, Sanrio has also given a clear answer. The transition is expected to be completed in 2026, with “Aya” (a pen name), who has long worked with Yuko Yamaguchi on Hello Kitty’s creative direction, taking over as the fourth-generation designer. Having this close collaborator, who understands Yamaguchi’s design philosophy best, at the helm will no doubt reassure fans. Yuko Yamaguchi herself will move into an advisory role, continuing to watch over the character she has loved for half her life in a different capacity.
