Copenhagen-based playing card brand Small Wonder may have created this year’s most irresistible deck to flip through. It may look like an ordinary deck, yet when you rapidly flip through it in your hands, the once-still images connect frame by frame, instantly becoming a mini animation. Beyond this playful visual idea, Small Wonder also collaborates with artists around the world, transforming playing cards from game pieces into collectible works of art.
Founded by Nikolaj Honore, Small Wonder invites artists from a range of fields to co-design limited-edition playing cards, and has worked with more than 20 artists from Europe, the United States, Japan, and elsewhere. Some decks incorporate the idea of flip-book animation, with each card serving as a frame. As all 52 cards flip quickly past your fingertips, the images play in sequence, making the deck a playful work that combines graphic design, animation, and collectibility.
For its latest release, “COLOR INDEX,” Small Wonder partnered with Berlin-based graphic designer and print artist Julia Schimautz. She also runs the creative studio DTAN Studio and is skilled at using vivid colors, gradients, geometric shapes, and animation. Fascinated by the “imperfections” of the printing process, she turns misregistration, color shifts, and handmade traces into a distinctive visual language.

These creative traits carry over into “COLOR INDEX,” with bright gradient colors running through the entire deck. As the cards are flipped, the spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs gradually unfold, connecting into a fluid animated sequence. “COLOR INDEX” is limited to 1,000 decks worldwide, and each box has its own number. In response to high demand, the brand extended the purchase period by 24 hours, giving those who missed the first round one final chance to buy one. With a deck this special, it almost feels like a shame to use it just for playing.
