Blooming peonies are layered into uppers, with slender branches and leaves reaching upward; at first glance, it looks like a miniature garden growing right on your feet, romantic with a touch of surrealism.

Shu Katerina’s work isn’t limited to traditional floral design; she sees plants as materials that can be “worn.” Soft petals, large leaves, and unexpected ingredients such as tomatoes, zucchini, and cauliflower have all appeared in her creations, becoming shoes, bags, and even clothing. She improvises with the natural colors, textures, and shapes of her materials, so each piece retains the irregularity of plants as they grow.

Interestingly, these works were never intended to be preserved forever. Flowers wilt, leaves wither, and fruits and vegetables have life cycles of their own. This sense of “transience” is precisely what makes Shu Katerina’s work so compelling. After a shoot, she even repurposes some of the materials, such as feeding the vegetables to animals or turning them into dishes, allowing the work to continue existing in another form.
