The most expensive handbag ever sold at auction in Asia
The undisputed highlight of the sale was lot 100, the snow-white Faubourg Birkin. This 20 cm Sellier handbag is made from rare matte cement-gray alligator, paired with white Togo, Swift, and Sombrero leathers. After intense bidding, it sold for HK$ 4,318,000 (about US$ 551,243). The figure not only set a world record for the Faubourg Birkin, it also made it the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction in Asia.
Record-breaking Birkins
Alongside the snow-white version, a Smoke Faubourg Birkin also performed remarkably well. Made with matte crystal-gray alligator and Epsom leather in smog gray and milkshake white, it sold for HK$ 3,746,500 (about US$ 478,284), more than 4.6 times its low estimate and a world record for the colorway.
A rare shoulder style that sold for 10 times its low estimate
Perhaps the most dramatic lot of the sale was the JPG Shoulder Birkin. This 42 cm shoulder bag is made from glossy candy-pink Porosus crocodile and finished with palladium hardware. It sold for HK$ 1,905,000 (about US$ 243,195), setting a world auction record for the Shoulder Birkin and exceeding its original low estimate by a full 10 times.
Younger generations are becoming the main force in top-tier handbag collecting
According to Christie’s, the sale drew collectors from 24 countries across four continents, with more than 60% of lots sold through its online bidding platform. One interesting detail: 41% of buyers were millennials or younger. This suggests that a new generation of collectors is shaping the top-tier market.
