As a prequel to Stranger Things, the stage play is set in Hawkins in 1959, more than 20 years before the events of the series’ first season. At the time, Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, and Bob Newby were still in high school. The story follows Henry Creel, a new student who has just moved to town, as he discovers his powerful, dangerous abilities. If you’re curious about the origins of the Upside Down or want to know how Vecna came to be, this prequel offers the most crucial clues and is essential follow-up viewing after the series.

The production has clearly spared no expense to bring the stage show’s striking special effects to the screen. To accommodate filming, the Broadway theater reportedly canceled all live performances from February 10 to February 14, allowing the crew full access to the venue. This wasn’t a simple single-camera recording: multiple cameras were used for a high-quality production designed to capture every subtle expression and the tension of the stage, so audiences worldwide can enjoy an immersive viewing experience from home.
Although Netflix has not yet revealed an exact release date, it is expected to arrive soon. Then, readers will be able to experience Hawkins’ mysterious, oppressive atmosphere from the comfort of home.
