Switch on a warm light when you get home, and a once-dull space instantly feels alive. MUJI Japan has unveiled six new lighting fixtures set to roll out from September 16, extending the brand’s signature minimalist aesthetic into the interplay of light and shadow at night. Lighting is no longer just a functional accessory, but a sculptural piece that reflects your taste at home.

Rather than the single, practical styles common in the past, MUJI isn’t trying to create one all-purpose lamp for every space this time. Instead, its varied silhouettes and material textures let you choose based on each room’s style and how you use it. The new lineup includes five rechargeable indoor lamps with three-level dimming, plus a motion-sensing mini floor lamp designed for nighttime lighting.
Among the five dimmable indoor lamps, the combinations of materials and geometric forms are a striking visual highlight. The “paper balloon” design, for instance, combines bamboo and paper and comes with interchangeable balloons in two sizes, casting a delicate, poetic Eastern glow when lit.
The cone-shaped lamp pairs a wooden base with a white conical shade, and a tap on the top switches between three brightness levels. The translucent glass version filters light through a frosted glass shade about 7 cm wide, creating an exceptionally soft glow. Clean trapezoidal and simple flat disc-shaped lamps also provide just the right level of light for nights when you don’t need the main lights on.
Beyond creating atmosphere, the collection also delivers on practicality. The “motion-sensing mini floor lamp,” launching at the same time, is priced at ¥2,990 and has a built-in motion sensor that automatically detects movement in the dark and turns on.
At just about 6 cm wide, its slim profile is ideal for an entryway, hallway, or bedside table. At night, it automatically switches off about 30 seconds after it no longer detects movement, so you won’t have to fumble for a switch in the dark.
The collection is priced from ¥2,990 to ¥6,990 and will be available in stores and online on September 16. Aside from the paper balloon style, which needs to be plugged in, most of the lamps are rechargeable and cordless. Even when they’re not lit during the day, they look like still, minimalist artworks on a wooden cabinet or side table.
