Summary

  • Ancient Greek Pottery Inspiration: The design is drawn directly from a 5th-century BC Ancient Greek mug in Jonathan Anderson's private collection, infusing classical shapes with clean, modern lines.
  • Centuries-Old Engine-Turning Craftsmanship: The delicate three-dimensional ribbing on the ceramic surface uses the engine-turning technique developed by Wedgwood in 1763, showcasing an architectural sense of rhythmic depth.
  • 4 Contrast Landscape Colorways: Including Mercury Blue/Jasper, Dark Brown/Terracotta, Marsh Green/Sage, and a Harrods-exclusive Shadow Grey/Grass Green combination.
  • Crafted in Barlaston, England: Each piece is handcrafted by artisans at Wedgwood's Barlaston workshop in England, using the classic matte Jasperware ceramic.

Following their previous collaboration exploring unproduced designs by ceramics master Lucie Rie, JW Anderson and Wedgwood are back together. For the new Volume II collection, Jonathan Anderson once again blends his passion for antiquities with home decor. Taking inspiration directly from a 5th-century BCE ancient Greek mug in his private collection, he has reinterpreted a classical silhouette from thousands of years ago into a piece for the modern tea table.

Light and dark contrasts: Sculptural color pairings

Compared to the first release, Volume II feels deeper and more connected to the earth and nature. Jonathan Anderson designed each set around a contrasting concept of dark and light, using the interplay of shades to emphasize the three-dimensional lines of the mugs.

This collection features four bicolor pairings. Mercury Blue / Jasper Blue pays homage to Wedgwood’s iconic Portland and Jasper heritage blues; Dark Brown / Terracotta showcases the raw, steady earthy tones of clay; Marsh Green / Sage Green takes inspiration from the natural greenery surrounding the Wedgwood factory in Barlaston, England. Finally, Shadow Grey / Meadow Green is a limited-edition colorway exclusive to Harrods.

Craftsmanship hidden in the details

The mugs feature a slightly sandy, matte finish characteristic of Wedgwood’s signature Jasper stoneware. The smooth, architectural ribbing on the surface isn’t just randomly engraved; it is created using “engine-turning,” a technique Wedgwood adapted for ceramics as far back as 1763.

This traditional craft, passed down for over two hundred years, gives the minimalist silhouette a tactile quality and a subtle sense of movement. It adds a touch of craftsmanship you can feel while enjoying a simple cup of coffee or tea.
