Japanese artist wani souma has brought his playful yet slightly quirky characters to Taiwan. His solo exhibition, “PARK,” has officially opened at SPUTNIK, bringing the characters from his drawings to life as three-dimensional plush works, as though stepping into a park inhabited by strange creatures. The opening day drew large crowds of fans lining up to enter, and the plush works quickly sold out, showing just how popular wani souma is in Taiwan.

wani souma is known for creating characters that fall somewhere between cute, humorous, and bizarre, using handmade-looking lines and bold forms. With “PARK,” these familiar characters move from the two-dimensional world into a real space, recreated in soft plush. Works in various sizes, each with a different expression, are scattered throughout the venue like a group of strange creatures living freely in a park, giving the entire space a soothing, imaginative atmosphere.

“PARK” drew large crowds of fans lining up to enter on its opening day. An artist Q&A and signing session followed on the second day, drawing an equally enthusiastic crowd. All of the plush works on display have sold out, and only a limited number of some merchandise items remain. The works will stay on-site for visitors to enjoy throughout the exhibition. Running through August 30, the exhibition is well worth catching at SPUTNIK if you haven’t yet experienced the cute yet quirky world of characters from wani souma’s drawings.
