- Homage to a Legendary Spirit: The flight of birds and the tranquility of moonlight paid tribute to the independent spirit that founder Gabrielle Chanel upheld and pursued throughout her life.
Just when we thought fashion show surprises had reached their peak, the Chanel Spring/Summer 2027 (Chanel SS27) runway redefined romance in a deeply poetic and ritualistic way. This season, Artistic Director Matthieu Blazy brought the brand back to a familiar historic landmark: the Grand Palais in Paris. Beneath its iconic glass dome, he wove together nature, poetry, and fashion to create a captivating, dreamlike space.

Stepping into the Grand Palais, natural light filters through the glass dome to reveal a breathtaking scene. The space above the runway is filled with suspended white bird models in various poses, looking as if they are soaring on the air currents. Tucked cleverly among the birds are mysterious moon installations.
The visual installation stems from Blazy’s deep observations of nature and migratory bird patterns. He also worked natural haikus featuring “birds and mushrooms” into the set design. The suspended birds and bright moon play off each other, transforming the Grand Palais from a mere building into a breathing, three-dimensional scroll full of Eastern poetry and natural movement.

Bringing birds and moonlight indoors, this visual feast carries a profound connection to the brand’s spirit. Looking back at founder Gabrielle Chanel’s creative journey, “freedom” was always her core design language. Whether through tailoring that liberated the female silhouette or fabric choices that allowed the body to move freely, her work acted as wings helping women break free from constraint.
Blazy keenly captured this historical heritage. Through the suspended white birds and tranquil moonlight, he connected the migration of birds in nature to the modern woman’s desire to explore the world as she pleases. As models walked beneath the hovering birds and moon with their fabrics swaying, every moment on the runway offered a gentle reminder: elegance is not about playing it safe, but about having the courage and freedom to fly high like a bird.
