Could good looks really be immunity too? Research finds people who are more physically attractive may live longer on average
Physical features reflect your genes~
A study by Arizona State University and the University of Texas, published in Social Science & Medicine, tracked 8,386 people who graduated from high school in 1957. Decades of follow-up data showed that those in the bottom sixth for physical attractiveness faced a significantly higher risk of death than the average person. Specifically, the lowest-attractiveness group had a 16.8% higher mortality risk. The effect was even more pronounced among women: their risk of death was 26.5% higher than average, and their life expectancy was 1.89 years shorter than that of women with average or higher attractiveness. The study suggests that appearance can, to some extent, serve as an indicator of physical health.

Why do attractive people have stronger immunity? The key is white blood cells
A 2022 study from Texas Christian University found that people considered physically attractive generally have stronger immune system function. Specifically, their white blood cells have greater phagocytic capacity, giving them better resistance to bacterial infections. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, we find certain traits attractive, such as facial symmetry and a rosy complexion, because they signal fewer genetic mutations and better nutritional status. In biological terms, then, greater attractiveness often corresponds to healthier genetic makeup.
A healthy lifestyle is key to turning things around
While the study found that people with the lowest attractiveness had shorter lifespans, it also found no significant difference in life expectancy between people of average appearance and those considered highly attractive. Rather than worrying about the looks you were born with, focus on healthy eating, regular exercise, and targeted skin care. Looking good and living healthily are, in fact, two things that complement each other.
