Laughing to tears and quietly healed: Yoo Jae-suk’s Guesthouse Rules is the hidden K-variety gem you need to catch up on right now
If life’s been feeling a little exhausting lately, you should definitely give this a try!
Have you opened Netflix lately and found yourself drawn to the new reality K-variety show 《劉在錫的民宿法則》 on the Top 10 list? The latest work from hit producer Jung Hyo-min, the show completely breaks from the polished, elegant warmth of past “slow variety” shows, turning “the nation’s MC” Yoo Jae-suk into a guesthouse owner so overwhelmed he looks as if his soul has left his body. While the first episode appears to be total chaos, the episodes that follow are both hilarious and moving.
Usually quick-witted and in control on screen, Yoo Jae-suk is left glassy-eyed from unclogging toilets and carrying heavy items. The addition of longtime collaborator Lee Kwang-soo brings their familiar love-hate chemistry to the show. Then there’s heartthrob Byeon Woo-seok, who rose to fame with “Lovely Runner” yet shows an endearing contrast as a complete disaster in the kitchen, alongside thoughtful rising actress Ji Ye-eun. With this group of vastly different personalities together, the vacation guesthouse’s intended laid-back atmosphere turns into a laugh-filled battle for survival.
20 everyday guests from diverse backgrounds are like one surprise blind box after another
Beyond the laughs the hosts naturally bring, the 20 everyday male and female guests who made it through the production team’s rounds of selection to stay at the camp are the heart of the show. Their backgrounds are diverse, ranging from reporters, civil servants, police officers, and bank employees to an actor who appeared in “The Roundup: No Way Out.” Even Ji Ye-eun’s younger brother makes a surprise appearance! As extroverts and introverts, slow-to-warm and enthusiastic personalities come together, it’s like opening one Kinder Surprise egg after another. Each person has unexpected stories and charms that make viewers want to get to know them better.
Some come here to make up for past regrets, while others simply want to step away from the busyness of everyday life for a while. Bringing different life stories with them, they quickly shed their usual identities and labels, settling into the guesthouse like old friends who have known one another for years. The close bond they build while cooking, chatting, playing games, and caring for each other heals not only them, but also gives viewers a long-missed sense of relaxation, quietly soothing the weary souls of countless workers.
A warm conversation before the campfire: learning to be grateful for everything
On the show, Ji Ye-eun, who previously took a break from activities for health reasons, speaks on camera for the first time about her battle with thyroid cancer, which is deeply moving. While preparing food for the camping trip, Yoo Jae-suk asks with concern, “You look completely recovered. You really can’t tell that you were sick.” Ji Ye-eun replies with a faint smile, “The doctor said that if the tumor had grown another 0.1 cm, there would have been a risk of it spreading. I had quite a lot of tumors at the time, so I’m really grateful that everything turned out okay.”
At the late-night campfire, overcome with emotion, she can’t hold back her tears. Yoo Jae-suk immediately offers comforting words: “Everyone probably knows she wasn’t feeling well before, but fortunately, she’s healthy again now, so she can be here with all of us today.” In that moment, his words about “learning to be grateful for everything you have” resonate even more, because those seemingly insignificant everyday moments are really shining gifts.
Heartfelt words from senior actors: How do you settle an anxious heart during a break in work?
Another conversation that left a deep impression on me is one I’d like to share. Over dinner, two supporting actors who appeared in “The Roundup: No Way Out” ask Lee Kwang-soo and Byeon Woo-seok, their seniors, a concern they had long kept to themselves: “What’s the wisest way to handle a break from work while waiting for your next project?” This work-related anxiety around being between jobs likely struck a chord with many viewers, too.
Having gone through a long period without recognition himself, Byeon Woo-seok could deeply relate. He admitted that there are simply so many talented people in this industry, and the only way to compete with them is to work harder. He shared that his family was heavily in debt when he was younger, yet even when money was tight, he chose to take on fewer part-time jobs and focus on acting. “Because I felt that once you have a stable monthly income, it’s easy to become complacent.”
Lee Kwang-soo, sitting beside him, also openly shared that he still has the same struggle: “Even if it’s only a brief break from work, I don’t really know how to handle it. I can even become irritable.” Still, he believes that staying clearheaded is most important in such anxious times. He therefore set a regular daily routine for himself and follows it strictly, going to the gym and planning various activities to fill his days. “Keep yourself busy and focus on living each day well.” I think the heartfelt advice these two senior actors shared applies not only to actors, but can also gently offer direction to anyone who is unemployed or feels lost about their career or future life.
The cast has remained close even after filming wrapped, and their recent interactions on Yoo Jae-suk’s YouTube show will have you smiling from start to finish. Five episodes of 《劉在錫的民宿法則》 are now available, with veteran guesthouse owners Lee Hyori and her husband Lee Sang-soon set to make surprise appearances later. It’s exciting to imagine the chemistry they’ll bring!
