Just seeing the combination of A24 and Robert Pattinson is probably enough to put this movie on your watchlist. Pattinson returns in his new film Primetime as a hypocritical TV host, showing audiences just how terrifying the dark side of television could be in an era when networks would do anything for ratings.

They call themselves superheroes, but they’re actually just setting traps

Primetime is based on the highly popular 2004 US reality show To Catch a Predator. The production team’s methods were sensational: they rented houses, rigged them with hidden cameras, and posed as teens in online chatrooms to lure potential predators to the scene.

The moment a suspect walked through the door, host Christopher, played by Robert Pattinson, would swoop in like a god to expose their crimes. When the suspect tried to flee, waiting police officers would swarm them. This dramatic, high-stakes formula sent ratings through the roof, but it also drove the team to obsession. Desperate to secure a prime-time slot, they only cared about catching “bigger fish” and capturing even more shocking footage.

When justice becomes an excuse and personal desire takes over

The most chilling part of the film is how it exposes the production team’s selfish motives. Host Christopher only cares about hitting new ratings highs while covering up his extramarital affair, and producer Andie constantly pushes the crew to their breaking point.

One memorable scene involves an unknown rookie actor named Dan, who is brought in as a decoy. He only learns upon arriving at the set that he has to play a 13-year-old. As soon as filming begins, the suspect walks in and immediately drops his pants, leaving Dan frozen in fear. Retreating off-camera in tears, all he gets from the producer is a sedative and a cold demand: “I need this decoy to last longer.” Under the guise of fighting crime, no one actually cares about what the victims are going through.

Even the real-life host went to see it

Primetime doesn’t just recreate the controversy of networks blurring the lines between news and entertainment; it also brings up the high-profile case that drove an assistant prosecutor to take his own life. Interestingly, Chris Hansen, the actual host of the original show, recently went to the theater to see the film for himself.

The 67-year-old even posted a photo of himself in front of the movie poster on social media. Although his review stated the film was “very disconnected from reality” and questioned its purpose, his move to ride the wave of publicity and spark discussion feels remarkably similar to the ratings-driven tactics of his old show.
