Summary

  • London-based fragrance brand 12_things has created a perfume shop designed to disappear as products are sold.
  • Recycled metal drawers make up the display space, and every time a bottle of perfume sells, its drawer is removed with it.
  • The line features 8 experimental scents, exploring unconventional notes like metal, plastic, asphalt, ink, and dust.
  • Through this vanishing spatial design, the brand prompts a reflection on the retail industry's obsession with continuous growth and expansion.

While most brands are trying to figure out how to open more stores and add more products, one London perfume shop is doing the exact opposite—it hopes to completely disappear one day. Located on Hackney Road, fragrance brand 12_things is rethinking the retail experience with a highly unusual spatial design. Every time a customer buys a bottle of perfume, a piece of the shop goes with it, meaning the store slowly vanishes as its inventory sells out.

Founded by former Haeckels managing director Charlie Vickery, 12_things officially opened its doors on October 15. Step inside, and instead of the usual perfume counters, you’ll see an entire wall made of recycled metal drawers. The industrial space feels more like an art exhibition than a traditional fragrance boutique.

The metal drawers aren’t just display props—they are part of the product. Each drawer holds a bottle of perfume, and when a customer makes a purchase, they take the drawer home with them. As the items sell, the original display structure is gradually dismantled until the entire installation is gone. The design challenges the traditional retail model, turning every purchase into an act that physically alters the space.

The store’s spatial design is highly experimental, and its fragrances are just as intriguing. 12_things has launched eight scents that bypass conventional floral and woody notes, exploring unexpected elements like metal, plastic, asphalt, ink, and dust. From sight to scent, the brand is reinterpreting what a perfume can be, while using a disappearing store to reflect on the retail industry’s pursuit of constant growth and expansion.
