#MFW: Are tiny bags on their way out? MM6’s Fall/Winter 2026 show hints that roomy handbags are quietly making a comeback
A handbag that can hold the whole world really gets what commuting girls need!
Over the past few seasons, the fashion world has been almost completely taken over by cute little bags that barely hold anything. Every time you head out, you have to agonize over what to bring: phone in hand, lipstick crammed into a pocket. They’re equal parts lovable and frustrating. If you’ve also started to tire of this ultra-minimal way of going out, here’s some good news: at MM6 Maison Margiela’s Fall/Winter 2026 show at Milano Centrale, one returning trend came through loud and clear: roomy handbags are finally set to reclaim the fashion spotlight.

The beauty of everyday contrasts, taken to the extreme
Compared with the “old money” aesthetic, hugely popular in recent years for its pursuit of polished perfection, MM6 took a completely different path this season. The collection centers on simplicity and everyday life taken to the extreme. Beginning with an appreciation for the essence of clothing, the design team sought new ways to reinterpret it. The runway featured the most fundamental pieces in our wardrobes: plaid shirts, denim jackets, blazers, athletic tops, ski sweaters, and even long johns!
Yet clever styling made these seemingly ordinary pieces feel unexpected and playful. Athletic tops or plaid shirts were paired with full skirts; blazers were worn directly over long johns; sweaters were worn on their own with tights. This deliberately rule-breaking way of dressing brings an unexpected freshness to dreary fall and winter, while precisely capturing the real look of urban commuters: casual, with a touch of chaos.
The tailoring magic of deconstruction and reconstruction
Beyond its clever styling, MM6 also showed considerable skill in its tailoring. Seemingly ordinary shirts, trench coats, and jackets use ribbed knit detailing at the back to draw loose silhouettes into slim vertical lines, instantly flattering the body’s proportions. Blazers, trousers, and skirts are further simplified from their original forms, stripped of unnecessary embellishment.
The design team also focused on the details, adding plenty of elements to play with: linings turned outward, hems that can be rolled up and secured with snaps, cut-up exposed linings, and equestrian details paying homage to the ’80s. These deconstructive designs are shaped by the brand’s signature rebellious spirit.
The return of big bags: the Bauletto handbag
MM6 wouldn’t be MM6 without its boundary-pushing accessories that make you smile. This season, the brand’s signature face-covering sunglasses come in rainbow-bright shades, adding a pop of color to subdued fall and winter looks. As for bags, the new Bauletto comes in several sizes. Compared with the many rigid, sharply structured briefcases on the market that can feel imposing, the Bauletto has a softer, more relaxed silhouette. While it comes in several sizes, the oversized version is the real standout.
