#PFW: Balenciaga FW26 weaves light and shadow into its bag designs, the Midnight City bag is absolutely stunning

Creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has teamed up with Euphoria director Sam Levinson this time – just hearing about this pairing is enough to get your heart racing, right? The entire Winter 26 collection feels like a film in motion, so beautiful it takes your breath away and completely overturns our idea of what a runway show can be.

🎬 When fashion meets cinematic aesthetics

The theme of this collection is “CLAIROBSCUR,” French for “light and shadow.” Pierpaolo Piccioli and Sam Levinson, two masters in their respective fields, transformed the show into an immersive panoramic space. Once inside, it feels like more than a show; it is a real-time digital conversation. Light and shadow are more than illumination here – they are the protagonists. They outline shapes, wash color across surfaces, and capture fleeting moments, preserving them as marks of time. It is truly romantic.

Statement pieces that tell a story

This season’s pieces really make you want to reach for your wallet. Take note of the Midnight City bag in particular: its decorative pattern works with the play of light and shadow to create the feeling of carrying the flowing neon lights of a city at midnight. The D’Orsay sneakers also feature a finely rendered gradient, as though an imagined beam of light were softly illuminating the shoe. The HG Avenue bag’s flowing, sculptural quality evokes traces of time passing – modern and full of artistic character.

An unexpected collaborative surprise

Another major highlight is Balenciaga’s joint creation with classic French footwear brand J.M. Weston. The men’s and women’s shoes in the collection break from traditional conventions, using twisted and folded designs to conform anew to the lines of the foot. This reshaping of the silhouette preserves J.M. Weston’s artisanal spirit while bringing in Balenciaga’s avant-garde DNA, making these treasures worth adding to your collection this season.

Pierpaolo Piccioli also looked deeply inward this time, using the collection to express the idea that the body itself is clothing’s internal framework. The fabrics have been chosen with great care: supple leather, dense cashmere, smooth silk, and sequin embellishments all draw on their natural ability to absorb and reflect light. As the garments drape naturally with the body’s movements, their relaxed folds seem to breathe, inviting us to rethink our relationship with clothing.
