Top Three on the Charts Sung by AI: Meomuru's Ballad Takes South Korea's Melon Chart, Triggering Competition Debates with Human Artists
Are we going to have tech anxiety every time we listen to music from now on?
Summary
- AI singer Meomuru's track "Have You Become the Adult You Dreamed Of?"—produced using the music generation platform Suno—shot up to number three on the Melon TOP 100 chart.
- Capturing the pull between idealism and reality that many face today, the song struck a chord with listeners in their 20s and 30s, leaving plenty of fans moved to tears.
- Beyond the emotional response to the music, AI tracks competing on the same chart alongside human artists has sparked lively debate online over fairness.
Open South Korea’s Melon music chart, and you probably wouldn’t expect to find a top-three ballad without a single human voice. Recently, the single “Did You Become the Adult You Dreamed Of?” by AI artist Meomuru quietly climbed the charts, surging to No. 3 on the Melon TOP 100 at 4:00 p.m. on October 13. An algorithm-generated song hitting such heights on a mainstream South Korean music chart has led many to reconsider how we listen to music.
“Did You Become the Adult You Dreamed Of?” was released back in June, but it didn’t start its slow climb up the charts until September. Meomuru handled the planning, lyrics, and overall production, but the actual vocals were performed by the AI music generation service Suno.
Knowing it’s a machine singing, why do we still cry?

“When I was little, I thought everything would be better once I grew up, but as an adult, I’m still constantly chased by anxiety and exhaustion.” The title “Did You Become the Adult You Dreamed Of?” alone poses an unavoidable question.
Scroll through the song’s comments, and you’ll barely find any amazement at the technology. Instead, the section is packed with raw, heartfelt thoughts from 20- and 30-somethings facing the pressures of job hunting, work, and finances. Many left comments saying they found comfort listening to it on their commute home. One person even admitted: “Even though I know it’s sung by AI, the tears just fall on their own.”
This shows that when AI-generated emotion seems to surpass certain human singers, what truly moves us is the relatable story behind it. As Meomuru wrote in the song’s description: “To me, AI is a modern instrument and a partner that brings my imagination to life. Tools change, but stories don’t.”

Is it fair to compete on the same chart as human singers?
Naturally, an AI song breaking straight into the top three sparked immediate debate. Plenty of listeners and musicians have raised concerns: Is it really fair to place an AI track—generated from simple prompts with zero vocal training—on the exact same chart as human artists who spent years practicing? Evaluating both under the same standard seems to blur the definition of pop music.
On the other hand, some argue that if a song offers comfort, it has value, and there’s no need to dismiss it simply because it was made by AI. Beyond Meomuru, another AI track titled “Forest of the Heart” by Joseon Hip-Hop recently made its way into the Melon TOP 100.
With music charts shifting like this, listening to songs might bring a bit of tech anxiety over whether the tender voice in your headphones belongs to a real person. But as long as the confusion captured in the lyrics is real, any music that catches us when we’re exhausted might just be good music.
