When summer rolls around, flip-flops are always the easiest go-to option, but they aren’t the best choice for anyone who dislikes showing their toes. But who says flip-flops have to leave your toes exposed? Classic Brazilian sandal brand Havaianas has teamed up again with 3D-printed footwear brand Zellerfeld to launch the new Top Toe Mule. Deconstructing the familiar flip-flop into an avant-garde design somewhere between a sandal and a mule, it demands a second look.

Mention Havaianas and simple, classic rubber flip-flops immediately come to mind, but this time the brand decided to try something different. During Copenhagen Fashion Week last year, Havaianas partnered with Zellerfeld, a brand specializing in 3D printing, to transform light, open-toed sandals into shoes with a sculpted 3D structure. Most surprisingly, the toes that would normally be exposed are completely covered, quickly turning this familiar yet unusual design into a talking point in fashion circles.

The newly released Top Toe Mule blurs the boundary between flip-flop and mule even further. The design keeps Havaianas’ signature V-strap and toe post, but the upper expands into a fuller coverage structure that extends forward, giving the toe box a rounded, 3D silhouette. From the side, it looks like a futuristic mule; only on closer inspection do the hidden flip-flop elements reveal themselves.

Intriguingly, the Top Toe Mule doesn’t completely abandon what makes a flip-flop distinct. By tweaking the upper’s proportions, it brings a style sitting right between streetwear and experimental design to an otherwise casual summer item. Styled with wide-leg pants, mini skirts, or simple everyday outfits, it instantly becomes a visual highlight. For anyone uncomfortable showing their toes, it’s an unexpected alternative. Looking at this Top Toe Mule, could you tell it started out as a pair of flip-flops?
