After a busy workweek, weekends are made for finding somewhere quiet that can still spark inspiration. Wong Chuk Hang is now home to a new art project. Serakai Studio’s second exhibition at GOLD, “dreamedcore,” is quietly stirring up discussion on social media.
“Dreamcore” memories, from late-night malls to softly lit corridors
The exhibition’s most interesting starting point is its effort to bring into reality the atmosphere that feels distant yet familiar to so many people wandering late at night. It attempts to turn “dreamcore” – an algorithmic aesthetic that draws heavily on visual textures from the 1990s through the early 2000s – into a collective experience that spans generations. For those born in the 1990s, who are now entering their thirties, blurry images, deserted malls, and softly lit corridors create an illusory world where childhood memories and digital algorithms intertwine.
A cross-disciplinary dialogue among 22 emerging Asian creators
“dreamedcore” brings together 22 emerging interdisciplinary artists and creative practitioners from across Asia. Rather than simply an art exhibition, it is a sensory experience pieced together from personal memories, online platforms, and moving images. Among the highlights are a retro mini cinema specially arranged by the design team and a physical fashion runway running through the center of the venue, displaying clothing from independent brands across Asia. Together, fine art, surreal furniture, and design turn the space into a tasteful concept store. Filled with the hazy atmosphere of deserted malls and digital afterimages, the space avoids rigid dogma. Instead, its visuals – lonely yet deeply healing – speak to modern people’s endless longing for the innocent days of the internet.
