Runways are no longer populated solely by stick-thin models, mass-market brands have rolled out plus-size options, and "Body Positivity" has become one of the most popular hashtags. Yet in real life, have we really become more confident about our bodies? POPBEE recently conducted a reader survey on "fashion and body types." Among the hundreds of real responses collected, we found some thought-provoking contradictions: Even as the fashion industry champions inclusivity, more than half of women still feel frustrated in the fitting room when they can't fit into something.

The survey found that 60.4% of respondents agree that the fashion industry has become more inclusive in its representation of "diverse body types" over the past decade. Yet when asked which body type they see most often among models today, 53.2% of readers chose "a healthy figure with visible muscle definition." Fewer than 10% (9.9%) felt that the current landscape is "truly diverse, with people of all heights and sizes represented."

The data reflects a reality: Beauty standards in fashion have changed, though to some extent, this feels more like a shift from one standard to another. The former preference for a "traditionally slim" body has given way to today's ideal of a "firm, fit" physique. The focus has shifted toward muscle definition and an athletic look. This also aligns with another finding: Nearly 60% (57.7%) of readers say they most often view content related to "fitness, body shaping, and workout posts" on social media.

What we need to consider is whether this shift in beauty standards has quietly created a new ideal-body framework, perhaps one with an even higher bar.

Open Instagram or Threads, and polished outfit photos and perfect bodies undoubtedly intensify comparisons over appearance and body shape. The survey found that 87.4% of readers admit that using social media in their daily lives makes them feel critical or anxious about their bodies (62.2% say it happens occasionally, though they can adjust their mindset; 25.2% say the more they look, the more anxious they become). Only 12.6% said, "Not at all, I'm very confident."

Even more concerning, when they encounter clothes that run too small to fit, 64% of readers said they feel "a little frustrated." Faced with the fact that some brands' sizing is not inclusive enough, most women's first response is still to question themselves and feel dissatisfied with their bodies.

Only 36% of readers place the responsibility on the brand's design, finding the brand's sizing absurd or simply deciding not to buy. This mindset shows that clothing sizes still largely shape consumers' sense of self-worth. It raises the question: Do we really want to give a piece of fabric the power to define our worth?

Although the environment is full of anxiety, time can be the best remedy. When asked whether their attitude toward fashion and body image had changed with age, 65.8% of readers chose: "I've become more relaxed and started to understand that comfort matters most."

The data shows that as they mature, more women are no longer blindly trying to conform to particular clothing sizes or trends. They are beginning to realize that clothes are meant to serve the wearer, shifting their focus to their own experience of getting dressed and to comfort, and learning to make peace with their bodies.

At the end of the questionnaire, respondents were asked about "the ultimate meaning of fashion." The largest share chose "expressing one's personality to the fullest" (43.2%), followed by "reflecting real life" (36.9%).

Taken together, the survey reflects not only the struggles and anxiety modern women face in their pursuit of beauty, but also their growing sense of autonomy. Fashion's meaning is gradually shifting away from "selling a fantasy of perfection" (chosen by only 19.8%) and returning to personal self-expression and lived experience.
